What are the best foods to eat on a vegan diet? One wonderful thing about the vegan diet and lifestyle is choices. Unlike 20 years ago, foods to eat on a vegan diet were limited to whole foods primarily. There were also some accidentally vegan foods as well. But the huge vegan gourmet industry we have today didn’t exist.
It has never been easier to go vegan. It used to be that vegan diet restrictions meant you couldn’t eat anything resembling meat. This made it hard for a lot of omnivores trying to make the switch. In a society that very rarely eats vegetables, switching over to mostly vegetables as a vegan was unthinkable for many.
These vegan restrictions don’t apply today. With all of the vegan meats and other gourmet vegan products available now, you can basically go vegan and never change the foods your eating. If you loved burgers you can still eat burgers. Want a fish stick or chicken patty? No problem. We have many vegan versions of them and they are quite good.
Just because you can eat something doesn’t mean you should. I’ll admit I enjoy a vegan burger occasionally. I recently ate some excellent hot dogs using the Field Roast Frankfurters. They are delicious. But is that really the best foods to eat on a vegan diet? Not really.
I think balance is important. Go ahead and enjoy some of those foods. And if you are just starting out, eat a lot of them. But you should be moving more and more towards a whole foods plant based diet. It may look daunting at first but it is something you will grow to love in time.
I started my vegan journey about 3 1/2 years ago. I used to eat a ton of vegan burgers and other process vegan foods. You should know that while those foods are vegan, and they are healthier than their non-vegan counterparts, they are not healthy. Most are loaded with oils, preservatives, sodium and other things not conducive to optimum health. If I can evolve into someone that eats primarily whole foods anyone can!
You should set a goal of eating 80% or more of your calories every week from nutritious and delicious whole plant foods. In case you aren’t exactly sure what that means let me give you the basics. Keep in mind there are many other foods to eat on a vegan diet that are good for you. But these are staples.
(or frozen as long as it’s only the vegetables inside)
Beans, Peas, Lentils, Legumes
Whole Grain Products
Nuts and Seeds
If you can focus your plant based vegan diet on those categories you will be eating as healthy as possible. It’s impossible to go wrong or mess up a diet comprised of whole foods. It’s impossible to gain weight eating like that and you will be less prone to many of the diseases omnivores get.
