There have been many fads and movements over the years to promote veganism. None of them as interesting to me as Veganuary.
You have probably hear of meatless Monday, Vegan ’til 4 or Vegan ’til 6. The most popular of those has probably been Meatless Monday because Oprah Winfrey did a show abut it where her entire staff tried veganism. I’m a fan of anything that saves the lives of animals and makes people think about what they are eating. But none of those things have excited me as much as Veganuary.
Veganuary is a concept started by husband and wife duo Jane Land and Matthew Glover. What started as an idea in 2013 has grown every year. It now has sponsors in Mercy for animals, Compassion Over Killing and the Human League. I think the best thing about Veganuary is you pledge to go vegan for an entire month. I believe that more people will feel the health effects of the diet since they are trying it for a month. This is lead to more people becoming lifelong vegans. Vegan for a day or Meatless Mondays are good to show people you can eat all day without eating meat. But one day is just too short to really start feeling the health benefits.
As a vegan who loves and cares about animals it is really easy to promote Veganuary without offending anyone. Just share the official website with your friends and let them read about it and decide on their own. This way you don’t have to push them to try something and risk alienating them. If they are interested they can sign up on the site and show their commitment and the website will give them tips and assist them with going vegan for a month.
